Volunteer Profile: Slobodan Nikolic

01

Slobo is doing his voluntary service in Berlin, Germany.

My name is Slobodan Nikolic, I’m 22 years old and I come from Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia. My voluntary service began in September 2011 and will be finished in December 2012. I was a member of the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization (EHO) of Novi Sad, Serbia.

EHO is a non -profit citizens’ association that continues the work of the Ecumenical Humanitarian Service, founded in 1993 at the initiative of the Word Council of Churches (WCC).

EHO was my sending organization and Amaro Drom e.V. was my hosting organization.

Amaro Drom e.V. is a national organization.  It is an intercultural self-organization of young Roma and non-Roma which was established in 2006. The main priority is the socio-cultural youth work, the strengthening of self-initiative, mobilization, networking and self-esteem of young Roma and their political and societal participation.

My job in the voluntary service is a weekly meeting with the youth where we sustain our classes playing with the band Nemoratori, thereby presenting Roma music and also Roma tradition. This job really satisfies me. To work with youth for me is a great pleasure where I can highlight my qualities such as creativity, positivity, etc.

Whenever there are events we represent our music in the best light, I always participate in these events including  festivals, streets events, carnivals etc. I participated in a lot of meetings, debates, seminars where I was sharing my experience and learning something new for myself. At these meetings I also met new friends, and gained a lot of new experiences and knowledge.I hope that many experiences and challenges are waiting for me, as well as meeting new people which is always fun.
