Romani Resistance Day in Budapest
Several hundred people attended the event, organized on the Mátyás square in the centre of the 8th district of Budapest – a district known for its high percentage of Roma population. The people were curious. Most of them probably have never heard about the 16th of May before. This significant day of our history, were we Roma proved our courage, our strength and our will to offer resistance.
This event was not a simple act of commemoration like all the others. It was an event of personal stories. An event that allowed the Roma to express themselves through speeches, raps, music and slam poetry. On this day we remembered our heroes. We remember the men and women, who fought for their people, for their own freedom and against repression and murder. On this day we express our pride towards these heroes and also those, who survived the genocide and are still alive today. We express our honor towards those, who committed their lives to claim justice and to speak up for their rights.
At this event the everyday routine of the people living in this district stopped for a few hours. The people who gathered on the Mátyás square saw, that there are lots of things to be proud of as a Roma. The men, women and children realized that there are lots of heroes, who should be remembered and even honored today. That there are lots of Roma, to whom we can look up to. And that they themselves could become heroes one day.
Roma Ellenállás Napja Budapesten
Több százan vettek részt az eseményen a Mátyás téren, a nagyszámú roma lakosságáról ismert 8. kerületben. Az emberek kíváncsian nézelődtek. Többségük valószínűleg nem hallott korábban a május 16-I ellenállásról. Történelmünk egy jelentős napjáról, amikor mi, romák bizonyítottuk bátorságunkat, erőnket és, hogy képesek vagyunk az ellenállásra.
Ez az esemény nem pusztán egy megemlékezés volt, mint a többi. Ez az esemény a személyes történetekről szólt, ahol lehetővé vált, hogy romák beszédeken, rapen, slam poetry-n és zenén keresztül fejezzék ki magukat. Ezen a napon a hőseinkre emlékeztünk. Azokra a férfiakra és nőkre, akik a népükért, a szabadságukért harcoltak az elnyomással és gyilkolással szemben. Ezen a napon kifejeztük büszkeségünket irántuk és a roma népirtás túlélői iránt, valamint tiszteletünket azok iránt, akik elkötelezetten küzdöttek a jogaikért és az igazságért.
Ezen az eseményen a kerületben lakók napi rutinja megszakadt néhány órára. Akik összegyűltek a Mátyás téren látták, hogy romaként milyen sokmindenre lehet büszkének lenni. Férfiak, nők és gyerekek felfedezték, hogy milyen sok hős van, akikre emlékezni kell. Hogy milyen sok roma van, akire fel tudunk nézni. És hogy egy nap ők maguk is hősökké válhatnak.
