Call for Applications – Roma Rights and Citizenship Fellowship

The Tom Lantos Institute is looking for a dedicated Roma fellow for its Roma Rights and Citizenship programme. The fellow will work under the supervision of the Programme Manager for Roma Rights and Citizenship.

The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) is an independent human and minority rights organisation with a particular focus on Jewish and Roma communities, and other transnational minorities. As an international research, education and advocacy platform, TLI aims to bridge the gap between research and policy, norms and practice. The TLI engages both in knowledge generation as well as empowerment and advocacy.

The Roma Rights and Citizenship programme works to promote and facilitate effective participation of Roma in cultural, social and, economic life, and in public affairs in order to strengthen  active citizenship of Roma in Hungary and beyond. The aim of the fellowship is to provide the fellow with first-hand experience in the development of the Roma programme of a minority rights institute operating in Europe. The fellow will work primarily on the Roma programme, but s/he may also be involved in TLI’s other two programmes: Jewish Life and Anti-Semitism and Human and Minority Rights.

The fellow should be available on a part-time basis (18h per week) preferably for at least 6 months, starting in February 2014. The fellow will support the programme manager, as follows:

  • assisting the programme manager in the implementation of specific projects, including undertaking administrative tasks when required;
  • writing communication materials in Hungarian and drafting communication materials in English, including updating the website;
  • minor translation tasks from Hungarian into English;
  • research assistance.

Required qualifications and skills:

  • At least a completed BA, preferably MA, in social sciences, political sciences, law, or any related discipline;
  • Hungarian to the level of a native speaker; working knowledge of English; skills in any of the Romani dialects is an asset;
  • Strong interest in human and minority rights, identity politics and social movements, in particular in relation to Roma communities;
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills;
  • Strong administrative skills;
  • Ability to work autonomously and to take initiatives;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

TLI offers a modest fellowship amounting to 30 000 Ft net per month on a part-time basis (18h per week). TLI can also provide the fellow with a monthly public transportation pass for Budapest.
