“..An ideal opportunity to explore the world, and discover ways to contribute positively” – Naomi

Last year I graduated from university with a degree in political science. Presently, I feel uncertain about what career path I want to go down for my future, and whether it will have anything to do with my degree! Wherever I end up, I hope it has the same kind of energy and community that I find present here at Phiren Amenca.

My name is Naomi, and I use they/them pronouns. I was born and raised in California and have been actively involved in various organizations, including Model United Nations, Mauna Kea Protectors, and Students for Justice in Palestine. In my free time, I enjoy reading—particularly LGBTQ+ literature—watching cartoons, practicing piano, and exploring new hobbies I find on TikTok.

I am currently in Budapest as a volunteer through the Young Adults on Global Mission program, a year-long service initiative through the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America for young adults. Before joining this program, I felt uncertain about how to best utilize my degree. The program offered an ideal opportunity to explore the world, deepen my understanding of global communities, and discover ways to use my education and gifts to contribute positively to society.

I am grateful to be volunteering with Phiren Amenca. This experience has been very enriching, offering me the opportunity to learn about the Roma community and the systemic racism targeting Roma people—an issue I was largely unfamiliar with before arriving here. Engaging with activism beyond the university setting has provided valuable insights into grassroots efforts and community-based advocacy. Observing the perseverance required to pursue meaningful goals despite persistent challenges and societal indifference is both inspiring and something I aspire to follow moving forward.
